Default Fun with a really cheap guitar

I bought a Bently Blues Box "kit" for $40 brand spanking new in the box. It is a 3 string cigarbox guitar. It is about the size of a ukulele. The "frets" are ink marks on the "fingerboard". And the strings are about 3/8" off the board. It uses bolts for the bridge and the nut. I have been having great fun with it.

That's great! 'Bently' didn't help in my search. I found Hinkler Blues Box Slide Guitars and they look exactly like yours.

    and the four string version

You still need an amp of course. I've heard genuine cigar box guitars in person. Amazing.
It reminds me of the scene in It Might Get Loud where Jack White builds and plays a one string.

Hinkler is correct. My bad. This is a Blues Box. They are on sale on Reverb for $35 right now.

I was playing this through my Roland Cube 30. It has a Piezo pickup, which is essentially a microphone, so even amplified it sounds acoustic.
After playing with this thing for a couple of weeks I want a real one. But I want one with a fretted neck and a real guitar pickup would be nice.

In this video I am playing it without an amp. You won't want to listen to the whole thing. It was the first time I had ever played it and I was just experimenting. This is just to give you an idea of how they sound without an amp. Not too bad really. It puts out a surprising amount of volume.

Impressive. You can't beat the value for money. I did watch the whole thing. That guitar is in good hands.

Sort of along these lines, there is also the lap steel guitar. There are YouTube videos on how to make your own. Many of those end up looking very professional, not a hack DIY. The thing lap steel has in common is an extremely high action, so that the strings don't bottom out on the fretboard, and the fretboard doesn't have any frets, just markings as guidelines. It's played with a tone bar -- no fretting with fingers, although fingers can do selective string muting.

It is limited by that, so lap steel evolved into pedal steel guitar. With a huge jump in price.

Yeah always gotta have that huge jump in price. Cigarbox guitars started out with people too poor to afford a hand made instrument. Then they started becoming a popular novelty. I have seen a couple of priced at over $1100. I have been looking at some around the $150 range. I think that much is reasonable as I priced out parts to build one the way I want it and they totaled around $100. A person's time is worth $50 if they do a good job. I got a six string for that. You can see it in my Electric Slide post I just did. It has a PAF humbucker with a coil splitter. It really sounds fantastic.
