    Default Help - Groove

    Hi to all,

I have now been attending lessons with a local teacher since february this year and with loads of hours practice I am getting decent at playing the acoustic fingerstyle arrangements of freight train and avalon...I am achieving about 80 tempo with metronome assistance and feel quite encouraged with this.

My teacher, whenever I play these tunes always advises me to take care of the groove...and it seems no matter what I do I cannot understand this....I searched google with terms like guitar groove and guitar thinking like a drummer, tutorials on rhythm etc...mainly I find that with the boom chick style for both of these tunes it comes down to accenting the 2 and 4 beat as if following a drummer...but then when I record and hear myself I can barely hear anything different from when I accent the other beats...however I can surely feel the 2 and 4 beats inside me.

I am not sure you get an idea of this frustration as I feel I am getting into a rut with playing these tunes, and any other ones for that matter and thinking that there is no groove.

What do you all do over here to train to play with groove and any links, videos, material I can follow to improve on this please.

    Thanks to all for help.

    Emann

Try searching JamPlay instead. There are lots of lessons about this.

You could put your recordings on SoundCloud and give us the link to them here.

Thanks so much for your reply.

This link is playing avalon acoustic fingerstyle at 80bpm and in order to achieve the groove I am accenting the 2 and 4 beats of the boom chick. (best if you copy and paste link I think as I do not know how to send a direct link)

Also can you kindly indicate best way to search as I am getting zero results when I try this....better still send me some links directly maybe.

    Thanks a lot.

    Hey Emann,

There is a link in the upper right corner of the JamPlay homepage (http://members.jamplay.com/) that says "Search". Click on it and type "groove" into the search field that pops up. I tried it and 40 items showed up regarding how to find and improve your groove. I think I might be taking some of those lesson to improve my groove!! Hope this helps. Good luck!

This lesson is pretty good at explaining the concept of groove: http://members.jamplay.com/guitar/ph...ove-vocabulary

Another good lesson about groove: http://members.jamplay.com/guitar/ph...s-and-dynamics

Here's a great article by Chris Liepe: http://members.jamplay.com/articles/read/186-got-groove

Your link is fine. I don't hear a groove. Don't take that too hard, I think this tune, at least at this speed, is a hard one to get a groove with.
I'm not a teacher, so take this with a grain of salt: You are trying too hard and it's getting in your way. Groove is rhythm, but a metronome is not a groove, so I wouldn't worry so much about the timing and accents. They aren't bad things by themselves, they just have to feel more natural. And it shouldn't get in the way of the melody either. You've practiced this enough you know how to play it; so now play it through without thinking about it.

Here are some things a music teacher might say to someone struggling with groove.
Play the music, not the notes.
Play it like you mean it.
    Feel it, don't think it.

I hope that helps. Good luck! You're almost there.

@MoparRules: ok thanks alot...I found the search and all is good now...your links are super and just so interesting..i will start following them hoping to gain more insight and improve.

@nwhy: no worries..in fact that is what I want to hear especially if there is no groove...I do also understand that this tune tommy emmanuel plays it at 140bpm which is way faster then the 80 i am at...I have a long way to go to reach that tempo and especially two chord changes are still making me nervous approaching them....I will take note also of your advise.

@ all: In the meantime can you suggest any boom chick tunes that when played in the region of 80-100 are still able to produce this thing of the groove...maybe I would start practicing them in the quest to improve the rhythm and this groove thing!

    Thank you so much.
